Expectations for haircuts
The school has very high standards for the uniform and appearance of its pupils. Our school also values inclusivity and diversity while maintaining a conducive learning environment. Therefore, students are encouraged to choose hairstyles that do not cause distractions in the classroom. Cultural and religious hair practices are respected and permitted. If there are any questions or concerns about the appropriateness of a hairstyle or colour, students and parents are encouraged to discuss them with school leaders to ensure compliance with this policy.
As part of this, we have clear expectations on the style of hair that is deemed appropriate for the school environment as set out below:
- Students are expected to maintain hair styles that ensure a conducive learning environment and prevent distraction to learning. As mentioned above any hairstyle that is worn because of a pupil’s race, religion or disability, this will be permitted once discussed with school leaders.
- Students are expected to have natural hair colours, again to maintain a focus on learning. The hair must be one natural colour which means treatments like dip dye are not permitted.
- Hair ornaments or headwear are not permitted, except on the grounds of race, religion or disability. As mentioned above any ornament or headwear that is worn because of a pupil’s race, religion or disability, this will be permitted once discussed with school leaders.
Expectations of make-up and jewellery
We believe that school should be a place where all pupils feel safe and comfortable. We wish to protect our pupils from the increased pressures of society, especially through social media about wearing make-up and jewellery. Therefore, pupils in 11 only are allowed to wear makeup and it must be subtle and light.
Any additional facial or body enhancements are also banned for all years. For example, false tan, enhanced eyebrows, false nails, temporary tattoos.
Pupils may wear two earrings, one in each ear. A stud must be worn that is plain metal or a small diamond. No other jewellery is permitted.
Expectations for our school community
Pupils must wear the correct uniform at all times (other than specified non-school uniform days) while:
- On the school premises
- Travelling to and from school
- At out-of-school events or on trips that are organised by the school, or where they are representing the school (if required)
Parents and carers
Parents and carers are expected to make sure their child has the correct uniform and PE kit, and that every item is:
- Clean
- Clearly labelled with the child’s name
- In good condition
Parents are also expected to contact the head teacher if they want to request an amendment to the uniform policy in relation to:
- Their child’s protected characteristics
Parents are expected to lodge any complaints or objections relating to the school uniform in a timely and reasonable manner.
