New-year visit to panto
Posted: 11th February 2020The magic of Christmas is still alive in Newham – oh yes, it is!
Year 7 students from Royal Docks Academy took a new-year visit to the Theatre Royal Stratford to watch the pantomime of Dick Whittington.
The 100 students were treated to the trip by Newham Council as part of its mission to broaden the horizons of young people in the borough.
Karen Kioi, head of Year 7, said: “Students in Newham are often not exposed to the theatre due to financial constraints and the cost of tickets, especially those from larger families. This was an opportunity for the whole year group to visit the theatre which is right on their doorstep.
“Students were so engaged; they were cheering and booing in all the right places and getting so engrossed in the story, which had been localised and really appealed to them.
“Some students – many of whom had never been to the theatre or panto before - came away saying it was the best day of their lives.
“I feel we have transformed their lives just by taking them outside of their boxes and to the theatre. They will carry this experience with them for the rest of their lives.”
